ReplyDeleteI am a Bible believer, creationist (though not young earth) and churchgoer. I started out as Greek Orthodox, then atheist, then Protestant fundamentalist and now Catholic. I've given scriptures a lot of thought since the late 70s and have understood them to not always be literal. Firstly, the Bible isn't a science book; secondly, the writers, especially in the Old Testament, often used metaphors to describe natural phenomena; thirdly, even Paul, centuries after Genesis was written, said he sees things through a glass darkly. The cosmos wasn't fully understood by the ancient writers but their emphasis was moral living in sight of God, not cosmology.
ReplyDeleteI forgot to add that the current scientific model was NOT made up, even if you insist that it was. I plead with you as a Bible believer that literalism isn't always the answer. If NASA lies, someone in government would have addressed it by now because we have diverse people in government who are quick to catch a lie. But NASA has been left alone! And how could this "lie" carry on for so long without someone spilling the beans? That's how I feel about extraterrestrials, that the government knows more than it's allowed to say, but there have been whisteblowers and truth-seekers on that, but not anyone serious about the earth's shape. I am implying that you aren't serious becauase, while you go to great lengths to peddle your beliefs, they are still confined by your literalism. Again, think METAPHORS to describe natural phenoena. The Bible's full of them!
ReplyDeleteI am adding material so I can activate the notification if/when there is a reply. Apologies in advance for its length, but I have given this substantial thought: I believe in God. I also believe that He created an earth, solar system and universe that are so awesome that they're beyond what ancients could conceive, hence their use of metaphors and similes to describe them. As for the "lie" about earth/cosmos: why? This model emerged over time and was not part of a satanic plot. Galileo lost his life defending his discoveries and the church finally came around. Stephen Hawking occupied the Newtonian chair at Cambridge and he could have died at any time so had nothing to lose, yet he held to the current model. And why would NASA and others spend billions of dollars supporting a lie, as well as other countries not even aligned with the US? USSR/Russia and, now, China have their space programs, which are also based on the heliocentric model. You'd think a serious journalist would go to NASA, at least, to try to uncover its alleged lies. Among all the competing networks with their myriad reporters, not a one cares to do that because they have no reason to. Only fringe conspiracy theorists do that. Musk's civilian passengers orbited the earth 3 times and came back with nary a word disputing the accepted model. Neither Musk, Branson or Bezos work for NASA and even are competing with one another, but they and their passengers didn’t dispute the round-earth model AFTER going up into space. Our TV reception is entirely dependent on satellites orbiting the earth and our provider has no reason to lie about their use.
ReplyDeleteI am MORE in awe of God by the current model than the one the Bible describes, but its writers didn't know better. The point of scripture is primarily moral, not scientific. The Bible doesn't mention germs or DNA, after all. If you really think science is the culprit behind the current model, you should live like the Amish do and turn off your computer, stop driving your car and go live in shack. In other words, you benefit from some science, yet dismiss that which is not suitable to your prejudices. I may seem prejudiced the other way, but I did struggle with round earth as a child and didn't just swallow it until I gave it serious thought. Believing every word of the Bible literally is not doing it justice, as the writers freely used metaphors and similes, including when they were attempting to describe the earth and cosmos. Believing science on earth/cosmology doesn't contradict the Bible even though the writers thereof didn't envision it. They tried to and fell short because, as Paul said, “Now we see but a poor reflection; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully...” (I Cor. 13:12 NIV)
